Abstract

The pervasiveness of corruption in Nigeria has been recognized as a significant obstacle to her political and economic development. Since the term‘development’ originally and etymologically means apositive movement towards growth, progress and positive realization of the potentialities of entity or
process or event in question, the corruption of the process impedes progress or mares the attainment of political and economic goals. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to reveal the causes of corruption in Nigeria, the factors that create opportunities for it and its effects in her economic and political development. This paper will argue that corruption is a major impediment to the promotion of effective government and a sustained economic growth. This situation leads to an overall corrosive effect on Nigeria’s national development peace.
